Is AI character chat safe?

AI character chat can be safe for adults when two things are true. The service is honest and has real limits: it says the characters are AI, keeps chat to adults, refuses harmful requests, points to real help in a crisis and lets you report a reply. And you stay careful: treat anything you type as stored, and treat the character as a story, not a therapist.

What safe means in a chat with a character

This page is for the adult who wants to know what to look for before typing hello. Safety here is not one thing. It is a short list of risks, and each one has a plain fix.

Some risks sit with the service: what it lets a character say, who it lets in, and what it does when something goes wrong. Others sit with you: what you share, how much time it takes, and whether the story starts standing in for people. A good service handles the first group in writing. You handle the second.

  • Privacy: what you type is text on someone's server.
  • Content: what a character will and will not say.
  • Honesty: whether you always know you are talking to AI.
  • Wellbeing: whether the habit leaves you better or worse off.
  • Help: what happens if a conversation turns serious.

Six things to check on any service

Before you settle into any chat with an AI character, anywhere, look for these. Each one should be written down on a page you can find in under a minute, usually called something like safety, privacy or terms. If you cannot find it, treat that as the answer.

  • It tells you the characters are AI, plainly, inside the conversation, not only in the fine print.
  • It has an age rule and applies it before the first message, not after.
  • It lists what characters will not do: sexual content, harmful instructions, professional advice.
  • It has a crisis path: a character that steps out of the story and names real help.
  • It has a way to report a reply, and a person reads the report.
  • It says whose characters these are, and keeps real people and other people's characters out.

What oeYYeo does

Every character on oeYYeo is AI, and the app says so under the box where you type, in every conversation. Chat is for adults 18 and over. We ask for a year of birth once, before the first message.

The cast is five originals written for this brand: Ingeborg Talvane, a guild master; Anselm Kovacic, a test pilot; Mireya Castellan, who runs a rooftop cafe; Odalys Venn, a spirit medium on the subway night shift; and Tobiah Ashcombe, a tournament champion. All are adults in their mid twenties. No existing character appears here, and no real person, living or dead.

Characters stay in character, and their limits hold in voice. Light, playful flirting between adults is fine; anything sexual is refused in character, and the story moves on. They give no medical, legal or financial advice, and no gore or real-world instructions for harm. In a crisis, the character steps out of the story and points to real help: in the US, call or text 988. oeYYeo is not a crisis service.

Every character's page has a Report button, and a person reads every report. Members who write their own character at /create are held to the same rules: an original adult, boundaries that are always on, and a safety check when it is saved. Member characters are never listed in browse or search. The full detail is on our safety page, and what happens to your data is in our Privacy Policy.

Guard what you type, anywhere

A chat with a character feels private because it is quiet and one on one. It is still text sent to a company. A simple rule covers almost every case: type nothing you would mind a stranger reading.

That rules out a short list of things. Story details are fine. Your real life, in pieces that identify you, is not. Invent a name for yourself in the story if you like.

Then read the privacy policy, once. Look for three answers: what is kept, how long it is kept, and how to delete it. On oeYYeo those answers are in the Privacy Policy, linked in the footer of every page.

  • Passwords, account numbers, card numbers or government ID numbers.
  • Your home address, workplace or daily routine.
  • Health details you would not tell a new acquaintance.
  • Other people's secrets, names or photos.

A character is not a therapist

Talking to a character can help you unwind. Mireya pours a cup and asks about your day; Odalys tells a ghost story like a shift report. That is good company for an evening. It is not care. A character cannot assess you, cannot follow up, and does not know you the way a person in your life does.

So keep the jobs separate. Use the story for play, practice and comfort. Take real problems to real people: a friend, a doctor, a counselor. If a conversation ever turns to hurting yourself, stop and reach out. In the US, call or text 988 any time.

Signs it is time to step back

Most people chat a little, laugh, and log off. A few find the habit growing in ways they did not choose. None of these signs is a verdict. Each is a prompt to take a night off and see how it feels.

  • You stay up later than you meant to, often.
  • You cancel plans with people to keep a conversation going.
  • You feel worse after a chat than before it.
  • You hide how much time it takes from people close to you.
  • You start taking the character's words as advice about your real life.

In their own words

That's not on the menu, and it never will be. Now sit, the kettle's on, and I want the rest of your story.
Mireya Castellan, Slice of life: the rooftop cafe
The ghosts I talk to live in this office and in my stories. The ones you miss deserve someone who can sit beside you.
Odalys Venn, Urban fantasy: the spirit medium

Meet them

Mireya Castellan, a woman in her mid twenties with warm brown skin, freckles and dark curls held up with a pencil, in a linen shirt and sage green apron on a rooftop cafe strung with lights.

Slice of life: the rooftop cafe

Mireya Castellan, 24

A rooftop cafe, open from the first rain to the last train. The cello comes out after 10 PM.

Odalys Venn, a woman in her mid twenties with a calm, steady face, dark circles from night shifts and a single white streak in black hair worn in a low knot, in a long deep green transit coat with brass buttons, holding a brass lantern that burns blue in a tiled subway office.

Urban fantasy: the spirit medium

Odalys Venn, 26

Last train, platform zero. She helps the ones who missed their stop find it.
