What is an AI companion?

Most AI tools are built to finish a job: write the email, sum up the meeting, answer the question, done. An AI companion is built for the conversation itself. You open it because you want to talk, and the point is the talking.

That changes what matters. A good companion needs a steady personality more than it needs facts, a sense of humor more than speed, and a life of its own to talk about, so that the conversation has somewhere to go when you have nothing in particular to say.

Search for an AI companion and the results sort into a few kinds. They are built for different people, so it helps to know which one you are looking at before you start.

• The blank companion. You set it up yourself: a name, a look, a personality. It becomes whatever you describe, which suits someone who wants control over every detail.
• The friendly assistant. A general helper with a warmer voice. Good for questions, thinner as company, because it has no life of its own to talk about.

What makes an oeYYeo companion different

Each companion here is a written character, not a blank assistant you have to describe from scratch. Ingeborg Talvane already runs a guild hall full of quest boards at the edge of a haunted forest. Anselm Kovacic already has a salvage frame to walk out of the hangar. You do not have to invent a world for them; they bring one.

The cast are original characters only, with no existing anime, game or film character among them and no real person, living or dead. All five are adults, aged 24 to 26, with adult jobs and adult lives. Replies arrive as they are written, word by word, at the pace of someone thinking out loud.

What to look for in any AI companion

Whichever app you try, a few questions sort the good ones from the rest. Here is the list, with oeYYeo's own answers beside it.
