What is an interactive story?
An interactive story is a story where you choose what happens next, from fixed branching paths to AI text adventures that answer any move you type.
- Branching stories offer a few set choices at each turn.
- AI text adventures let you write your own move.
- On oeYYeo, a character plays the scene with you, in character.

Branching stories, interactive fiction and text adventures
Interactive story is the umbrella term. Underneath it sit a few older forms, and each one hands the reader a different amount of control.
Branching gamebooks were the first many readers met: a page ends on a choice, and each option sends you to a different page. Text adventures came next on computers, where you typed short commands such as look, take lamp or go north, and the game described what happened. Interactive fiction is the name that grew up around those games and their descendants. Visual novels add art and music to a branching script.
- Branching story: a fixed set of choices at each turn, written in advance.
- Text adventure: typed commands, answered by a game that knows its own rules and rooms.
- AI text adventure: anything you type, answered by an AI that writes the next part as you go.

How an AI interactive story is different
A branching book can only offer the paths its author wrote. An AI story has no tree. You can take the offered choice, or ignore it and do something nobody planned: hide the letter, lie to the clerk, walk out into the rain. The next part is written in answer to what you did.
On oeYYeo the storyteller is also a character. Odalys Venn, the spirit medium on the subway night shift, does not narrate from above. She is in the scene with you, at the counter, holding the lantern, with her own opinions about what you should do next. Every character on oeYYeo is AI, and the app says so under the box where you type. Replies arrive as they are written, word by word, so you can read along and decide your next move.
How to play an interactive story with a character
Treat it like a game where you and the character take turns. A few habits make it play well:
- Start with a setup and a choice, like the three openings above, or write your own.
- End your turn on a decision: "Do we take the stairs or the tunnel?" hands the character something to play.
- Ask for options when you are stuck. "Give me three ways out of here" is a fair move in any scene.
- Let choices cost something. A shortcut that loses time, or a truth that loses a friend, makes the next turn matter.
- Steer from inside the story. Characters stay in character, so a new event moves things faster than asking for a different reply.
How to write a branching story of your own
If you would rather write an interactive story than play one, the craft is mostly about choices. A choice is only interesting if the reader cares about both options and cannot have both.
Keep the number of branches small. Three options at a turn are plenty, and many good branching stories let paths split and later fold back together, so each ending stays reachable without writing a hundred of them. Give every branch a cost, a clue or a change, and make the endings feel earned rather than random. A quick way to test a draft is to play it with a character: send your setup and your three choices, and see which one they push you toward.
Is an AI role playing game the same thing?
Close. An AI role playing game usually means a text story where you play a character and the AI plays the world, sometimes with game rules such as stats, dice or an inventory. On oeYYeo there are no stats and no dice. It is a narrative game: you play yourself or a role, and the character runs their corner of the world from inside it.
The edges are the same as anywhere on oeYYeo. Chat is for adults 18 and over, confirmed once before the first message. Danger stays on the page, with no gore. Anything sexual is refused, in character, and the scene moves on.
In their own words
Three tunnels. The left one smells like rain, the middle one hums, and the right one is where the letter came from. Your call. I will hold the lantern.
Two options. Vent the reactor and lose the frame, or ride it down and maybe lose more. Ten seconds. Choose.

Common questions
What is an AI text adventure?
It is a text story where you type what you do and an AI writes what happens next. Unlike a branching book, it can answer moves nobody wrote in advance.
How many choices does an interactive story need?
Two or three at a turn is plenty. More options often mean thinner ones; fewer, sharper choices with real costs make a story feel interactive.
Can I play an interactive story on oeYYeo for free?
Yes. Chat with the whole cast is free, every day, for adults 18 and over. The paid oeYYeo plan is $9.99 a month and adds voice calls with every character, up to 240 minutes a month.
Can a character offer me the choices?
Yes. Ask in the scene, for example "Give me three ways out of here," and the character can answer in their own voice with options from their world.
